Insights Webster's dictionary defines a portrait as an artistic or photographic image of a person, esp. one showing the face. I like this definition because it's accurate and broad. The fact is a portrait can be whatever you want it to be. Certainly you have traditional portrait art, "showing the face" but a portrait can be much more or less. For example, the "image of the person" could be symbolized by their possessions. Portrait art can be as subjective as any other art discipline. Considerations about what one desires in a portrait are highly personal. There are countless variables and it's largely up to the art buyer. Be imaginative and creative in your thought processes regarding the portrait you want. Think about the character of the subject of your portrait. How does that consideration impact the environment you'd like to see them in? Are they at home in a leather office chair wearing wing tips or in sandals on a beach chair?
